(in association with the 31st EARIE Conference, September 2-5, 2004)

Humboldt University of Berlin

Founded in 1810 according to the conception of Wilhelm von Humboldt, the Humboldt-University of Berlin was established as an autonomous institution in a situation of crisis, and its mission was to facilitate outstanding scholarly and scientific achievements and promote criticism of established bodies of knowledge for the benefit of society. Even after nearly 200 years, this legacy still stands. The university carries forth its history of commitment to reform by contributing innovative ideas in both the academic and public spheres.

In keeping with its geographical location, the Humboldt-University of Berlin has developed close relationships with northern, central and eastern Europe. Particularly since its reorganization in 1989, the Humboldt-University has sought to define itself as an institution that consciously maintains a critical distance from political and social power and that fosters academic excellence, social responsibility, tolerance and internationality.
